How To

Quickly Ripen Avocados

Before getting started

Know the natural ripening time

Avocados left at room temperature will ripen on their own in about 4–5 days.

Speed up ripening with ethylene gas

Ethylene is a natural plant gas that triggers ripening.

1. Use the brown bag method

  • Put your unripe avocados in a brown paper bag.

  • Add one or two ethylene-producing fruits like bananas, apples, or kiwis.

  • Close the bag loosely and leave it at room temp.

  • Check daily — they often ripen in 1–2 days.

2. Try the sunlight trick if you don’t have other fruit

  • Place avocados somewhere warm and sunny (like a windowsill).

  • The warmth from sunlight helps them ripen faster — similar to how they ripen on the tree.

3. Bury in rice

  • This is another method to concentrate ethylene gas around the fruit.

  • It may take a few days but can help if you don’t have a bag or other fruit.

What NOT to do

Some common kitchen hacks can soften avocados — but they don’t actually ripen them naturally.

  • Microwave: Heating in the microwave makes the fruit soft, but it doesn’t develop full flavor or proper texture.

  • Oven: Wrapping in foil and baking at low heat also softens the avocado, but leaves it tasting unripe or “off.”

These shortcuts may make them usable faster, but they sacrifice the rich, buttery taste and natural ripeness you’re aiming for.

Perfectly Ripe Avocado Checklist

Feel
✔️Gentle squeeze (most important)
✔️Hold it in your palm (not fingertips).
✔️Apply light pressure.
✔️ Gives slightly, then springs back = ripe
❌ Rock-hard
❌ Mushy or collapsing
Color check (for Hass avocados)
✔️ Dark green to nearly black = usually ripe
❌ Bright green = not ready yet
(Other varieties stay green, so don’t rely on color alone.)
Stem test
Flick off the small stem nub at the top
✔️ Green underneath = ready to eat
❌ Brown underneath = overripe
❌ Won’t come off easily = not ripe yet
Weight
Pick up a few and compare
✔️ Heavier for its size = creamy inside
❌ Very light = dried out or past its prime
Skin texture
✔️ Slightly bumpy, firm skin = ideal
❌ Deep dents, wrinkles, or soft spots = overripe
🥑 One-Glance Verdict
